Applesauce Recipe

Who does not love applesauce? It's a food for all ages! However the small containers you buy in the store are terribly expensive. The worst part, who knows what really goes into it. There is good news! You can make an even better applesauce at home. With ingredients you got at the farmers market!

Apple Applesauce:

3 lbs of your favorite apple variety
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 pinch nutmeg
1 1/2 cups water
2 thin lemon slices
1/4 teaspoon salt

  1. Peel and core apples all of your apples. You can leave the skin on your apples if you prefer the texture, but I like a smooth apple sauce. If leaving the skin on red apples, you will end up with a pink hued sauce. Cut apples into approximately 1 inch cubes.

  2. Add all ingredients to pot, and turn heat on high. Bring to a boil, then cover and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 20 minutes or until the apples have softened.

  3. Stir frequently, making sure that the apples are not sticking to the bottom of the pot. Add more water if necessary. Remove lemon slices.

  4. Mash with a potato masher for a chunky applesauce or throw into the food processor for a smoother consistency. Serve immediately when warm over a nice pork loin or chill and use over some yogurt as a healthy breakfast. Enjoy!
